Job Title: Assistive Technology Instructor
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Including Physical Requirements)
1. Evaluates trainees' capacities and needs for learning, accepting supervision and completing assignments involved in the field of assistive technology.
2. Maintains the ability to use and instruct clients on all forms of assistive technology used in LWSB curriculum, including audio, visual and Braille devices.
3. Implements group and individual lesson plans for clients to learn concepts, laws, forms, regulations, policies, procedures, technical and general job requirements, and employer expectations and generally accepted social and work-world behaviors.
4. Emphasizes the efficient and effective use of any residual vision, tactile and other sensory modalities in the learning of course content.
5. Maintains appropriate records in the EYE client data management system, gathers essential data and other information and prepares monthly reports reflecting progress, problems, plans and specific recommendations for clients regarding continuation, modification or completion of training. Prepares other regular or special reports essential to accountability and evaluation of total Center services.
6. Shares significant information with other Center staff and keeps the Director, Vocational Programs informed regarding problems or situations likely to hinder or interfere with learning and teaching.
7. Works with all departments at LWSB and all participating rehabilitation workers in an interdisciplinary approach to promote interest, enthusiasm and information regarding vocational, computer and assistive technology services.
8. Works with vendors in securing equipment for use in the Assistive Technology and Assistive Technology Instructor programs.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert working with Grant Writer for new initiatives.
• Serve as backup to other Vocational Instructors as assigned by Director, Vocational Programs
• Participates in continuous improvement of the vocational programs offered by LWSB
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
40 hours per week
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, in Rehabilitation, Education, or related field, or four years of successful employment in the field of Assistive Technology. Teaching experience, particularly in the area of blind and visually impaired in a rehabilitation setting, is preferred
SPECIAL SKILLS NECESSARY
-Must be able to read Braille at 10 wpm.
-Ability to develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with trainees, peers, volunteers, consultants and administrative staff; possesses a wholesome appreciation for the discipline and its relationship to other disciplines on the Center's staff and an appreciation of the vocational training to visually impaired people in contributing to their vocational placement. Ability to assess individual strengths and needs of clients and the ability to clarify situations and provide emotional support and encouragement to enhance the client’s progress. Willingness and ability to be flexible to changes in assignment to meet the unique needs of clients. Ability to request, accept and use supervision effectively and to grow toward greater professional independence.
-Ability to organize and implement instructions without on-going dependency upon the Director of Vocational Programs and others. Ability to express ideas and information in clear, well-organized oral form to individuals and groups. Ability to describe clients, their progress and problems, and the ability to formulate and express relevant information in a concise, clearly written form that will be useful in evaluation and decision-making beneficial to the clients.
-Ability to read practice tests and administer certification tests to clients.
